I was at the school last friday same routine waiting for my wonderful eldest son, while waiting i bumped into my good friend's son (who is in remove class, a year retained before secondary 1). I went up to the boy and greeted him.
I asked how he was and how he was doing in school, he responded he was doing ok but he lamented school sucked and suddenly he handed over to me his marked exam papers, and said this," Uncle Eugene, i am just lost lah, i dont like school i dont like the teachers," he sulked in Mandarin.
I leafed through his exam papers, and this i remember, 6 marks for Malay, 15 marks for Mathematic, 40 marks for Mandarin and 5 marks for English out of 100 marks respectively, i was stunned for i never could believe this boy could fare so badly in his exam.
I told him this, " Fan, do you know with this result you are going to have big big trouble when you go to Secondary One next year?" he looked blanked than i countinued," you know in Secondary One, the subjects are going to be very very difficult and frankly your command of Malay and English, you will lose interest in study if you dont do something about it now."
Again i continued, " do you really want to study, boy and do your parents know about your result or did your teachers help you in your study?" with his head slightly bowed, he said," My mother always says this," i also dont know Malay and Englsih , so never mind lah" and my father busy with his works in the workshop," and he continued further," as for my teachers, they all think we are a bunch of hopeless kids and they just dont bother,"
I gave him a pat on the shoulder and telling him that he was a big boy now and if he needed advice, he could always come to see me. Deep inside me, i believe with some guidance this boy can be better at least but then again if the parents and the teachers dont care, what can i do?
P/S : Are you doing enough for the children or are we doing over enough for them?
