Would you laugh at a house husband?

An old friend told me the other day that he was in a dilemma, something to do with "relocation" something to do with him being a "house husband" something to do with him being away from his old parents and something to do with his wife earning so much more than he is,(after the relocation)

His wife was promoted to a very high position (she accepted it already) to Shanghai, house provided and the salary package is very attractive, she was to be there for a long time, contract  5 years. My friend actually wanted to stay back in Penang but his wife insisted that they should all relocate to Shanghai and she wanted the children to be there too, to enroll into international school there or to some kind of exposed to "the outside world"

Now my friend's dilemma started when his wife told him that when they "fully relocated" my friend's role will be "officially" amended to "house husband" 男主内。。。to take of the family, to send the boys to school and all the house hold stuff and the best part is he will be given allowance by his wife every month.

He asked me what would I do if I were to be in his position ? My friend is currently running his "cleaning service" business which he can easily sell off to his partner....

I said to him, I really didn't know but relocating to Shanghai sounds kind of cool to me though but being a house husband, I really don't know as far as this is concerned.......

Now I remember another old friend who gave up his hair saloon business,(was kind of small housing estate style) when his wife was doing so well in the MLM business, asking him to "close shop" to be a house husband instead, the last time I had coffee with him,he looked happy............I really don't know.

What do you think ha?

Can men really be a house husband and managing it well or better than the ladies?

P/S : Brothers can do it too, I reckon

  1. I know a few guys who in Australia doing well as house husbands... they seems to enjoy their role.. As far as this is concern, I think it's more on the 'attitude and character' towards accepting it..

  5. my dad is a retiree and a househusband! he takes care of the house and maintains the garden and cooks for the family and he rocksssssss! it's not an easy job to take care of the house and family 24/7, it requires great patience esp when there are old folks at home to be taken care of. Thank God for awesome dad!!! :)

  6. If I earn a lot more than my husband, I believe my husband doesn't mind to be house husband. My husband is more capable than me in running the house errands. How I wish I can earn more, so that my husband is a house husband. He is certainly going a very good job and putting most women to shame.

  8. If a partner can support the family financially, why not?? Some one has to look after the kids and bring them to school etc. If your friend does not like the idea of a full time homemaker, maybe he can find some part-time works in Shanghai. It is never easy to do household works, trust me. Actually my hubby is much better at doing the household works than me. Lol!

  10. I think it is perfectly fine but most importantly both parties must accept their roles fully, no feeling diminished or feeling small that kind of thing. It is the emotions that get in the way. As long as both parties accept, why not?

    1. I think respect must still be there, the man is still the head of the family, then okay

  11. i think there's nothing wrong with that as long as they have agreed on it and the men's authority as the head of the family is still there.

  12. First of all, does you friend mind to be a house husband? He knows the best for himself and his family. There's nothing wrong to be a house husband frankly, unless he cares too much for his ego.

Anyway, all the best for his future undertakings.

  13. Perhaps he'll feel better if the word "house husband" is not used? :) if he sees it as an early retirement or just as "taking a short break while he finds something to do in shanghai" then he'll feel better? Sometimes labeling can just narrows a persons' outlook in life. :)

  14. Personally, I won't laugh and gossip about anyone being anything.

And I would like to become House Husband if my Wife let me be. Or my wife is more powerful than me XD

    Who knows :)

  15. If a wife can be a housewife, what is wrong with a husband being a househusband? John Lennon did it after their son was born. Lots of men are doing it - I personally know a good number of people doing it.

Hope your friend is not worried about the stigma that goes along with that word. I feel the most important thing is if he's alright with it and his wife is alright with it, then nobody else's thinking matters.

Doesn't being a couple mean teamwork? It is usually the husband who puts a bigger portion of the food on the table but there is no rule that says the wife cannot do that too. I'd say he's lucky to have the chance to stay at home while his wife goes to battle outside. My two cents..

  18. For Asian it's not so easy. men still want to jaga their water face. But we have to face reality sometimes and come down to earth. If they are in such situation like your friend, faced it like a man and take up the challenge. Just hope the wife will not make him a cuckoo when they quarel. Oterwise it's gonna be tough on him.

  19. I won't mind if I could support the family and my husband stay in to be a house husband. Shanghai still an Asian country, perhaps the neighbour will talking behind your friend. But just put all this aside first and asking himself willing or not?
