Year 2012....the other kind of fear.....

Before you begin, let me assure you this post has nothing to do with the prophecy of 2012's doomsday but this fear of 2012 is personal as far as i, Jovial and the whole education system is concerned,,, i make it quick.

I was chatting with Jovial the other day, as we went along, he shared with me about a fear, a certain kind of fear which i could feel for him and the many of the students at large.

He said he was kind of fearful for year 2012,that's when the subjects of Science and Mathematics will be revert to Malay, after years he had found joy and fondness in mastering these two subjects in English but now my boy will have to brace himself for another challenge.

As a parent, i am sure i cannot tell him about how stupid the gomen could be in implementing something then abolishing it in a jiffy, and how the decision was made because certain quarters was yelling," English will erode the supremacy of our own Language.

Therefore i took the approach of "the road less travaled" by saying," Jo, don't worry about it, i have faith in you and i am sure you can master Malay as good as you mastered your English, at least you don't have to start with A a, Ba. Ba. Ca.ca, right and you can prove to THEM that you are a survivor? i gave him a hug and deep inside of me, i was worried.

  1. Good students...whatever language, they will do fine. The poor ones, whatever language...they will suck big time. No big deal! It's not a matter of language, it's a matter of attitude.

Just look as those scholarship holders going to study in France, Germany, Korea,Japan,Russia...in their languages, much good their excellent command of English or BM will do them there - not much of a problem, they will tell you as long as one works hard.

  5. My girl experienced the change when she was in form 1.. from malay science to english science and maths.. it was kind of tough too for her bec her english was not as good as her malay language..
what i wanted to say is, the kids will adapt fast.. not to worry so much.. only worry about them changing to something else later on.. goodness knows what else...

  7. German and Japanese are two of the strongest industralized countries for over 100 years; they cannot beat English as the leading language. I doubt Malay will ever have any chance as a useful language in the world of international trade and science.
If we stay here, may be we should just treat all languages as part of the balance diets or we will be constipated and full of gases.

  8. P.S. In most schools here, doesn't matter what language - the Maths & Science teachers will teach in...Mandarin! They say students can understand faster, students also like - can understand more easily...but I really wonder how they will answer the questions in the exams - never mind if it's in BM or English... The students here are quite hopeless at BOTH languages, only good at Mandarin...so makes no difference.

  9. Sadly next year my daughter can't really use my son's science and math workbooks because those are in English. Good news for the printers but not the parents....and trees.

  10. ACtually they are killing themselves and their own future, because they will be handicap in the international language. Except for the minister's and rich malays who don't believe in msian edu system because they send their kids to international schools and boarding schools and overseas for studies.

The consolation to Jovial is that many of us (our generation) grew up with KBRSM syllabus, studied Malay and Science in Malay and well, we turned out ok, didn't we? so, there is still hope. Just brush up his english at home and in social circles, let the selfish ones rot in their own selfishness while we strive on...

  12. My BM oso kaput dy after leaving skul for so long. For all I know, I only use them during skul days. Out in the working field, all we use is English... How the heck are we suppose to learn all those scientific terms in Malay? @_@

  14. i studied my Science and Maths subjects in BM too..not too bad lar, i'm sure your kid can manage it. One thing bad about our edu system here is, they keep changing the language, Malay - English - Malay! Why cant they fix to one? pening betul.

  16. I don't agree too with the language reversion.. its only 6 years! Its too short to see the outcome. Its better to keep the science and math subject in English because in Uni they all use English..
