One of my greatest childhood memories is when i was 10 years old, i remember i could refuse lunch,if my parents did not buy me the toy soldiers(which came in a plastic bag with the assortment of different kinds of plastic toy soldier)
Now,i have got a family of four of my own, not very rich, that's good because my children would understand as family we have to strive harder to achieve our dreams, not very poor either, that's also good, because the children will learn to be thankful of whatever they currently have.
So,when i grew up the toy soldier memory is still very much a part of me,even now i could picture myself playing with those toy soldiers and hugging them to sleep, calling out,"peng, peng, peng" (that's Hokkien for soldiers)
I am thankful despite money was hard to come by back then, my parents did not decline me of these little plastic toy soldiers and never did they know that their son could have such a fond memory of it till today.
My eldest Jovial has been asking me to buy him a digital DSLR camera for a long time now, every time he asked,i would say no with reasons that he could not retaliate. Just last week,he popped up the same request again but this time i did not say no, instead i asked him why he wanted to own one, he said that," Papa, i have been wanting to have this since a long time ago, it is kind like a childhood's dream to me"
Those words," It's like a childhood's dream to me" really flung me back to when i was 10 years,my craving for the toy soldier and the incomprehensible joy when really touching it and owning it.
I told Jovial that Papa would get him one this weekend and instead i surprised him more when i got him the brand new Canon 1000D digital DSLR on the 5th April 2011
He was so happy to see it and he knew that this could be the most expensive present i have ever bought for him till now and he always knew that his papa would not even spend this much on himself and being my good son he asked me how much i paid for it for he wanted to share part of the cost
I said to him," son, i just want you to have a good memory that you will carry with you for a long long time and i love you" he gave me a big hug and i was moist with some tears as i remember my TOY SOLDIER.
