At your own peril

"Are you afraid of death ?" this is the question that I love to ask one of my "breakfast kakis" who happens to be way overweight, heavy smoker, almost sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, did a "heart balloning" 3 years ago and in his late 50s.

So the answer I have always got from Teoh would always be the same," No lah, i am not afraid of death, person like me die better lah" but then again when I asked him the same question last night, it was a total contrast from his usual unsurprising answer.

So, Teoh was missing from our usual "breakfast meeting" Monday morning, I would always call him, whenever he absents himself from breakfast,(just to make sure he is all right) but yesterday my call went unanswered, so I thought he could have over slept

In the afternoon, met another "breakfast kaki" ,he kind of reminded me to give Teoh another call, so I did,and so I was told he was in the hospital,(checked in last Saturday night, complaining of severe chest pain)

So, last night,me and the other "breakfast kakis" went to see Teoh in the hospital and we took him out for supper and some light moments..................

When I asked Teoh the same question last night,"are you afraid of death" ,he was fervently saying that he was, he was even so afraid of going under the knife and he was also so determined to quit smoking and he even told us that when he checked out from hospital, he would buy himself a pair of sport shoes and do some walking.......

It was so funny, last time when I encouraged Teoh to walk the stairs up to his house,(Only 3 stories high), he said I was crazy but now he wanted to buy a pair of shoes and walk daily.............

Humans are so funny, we always need some calamity to wreck us, some sickness to befall us and some 'check ins to hospital" to remind us to take of ourselves...if we are lucky we might have the chance,if the luck was not on our side..............then we pay the price.

  1. In a way, once in a while...human need a 'wake up call' to set things right in our journey of life.
Family matters, love, friendship, finance and health alike. So, once in a while we need some self management to check that we are on the right track.
Have a great day ahead and hope your friend Mr. Teoh will be on the healthy path soon.

  3. hahaha, human is always like that, when all things are in comfort zone, we will always consider death is just a process of nature and unavoidable. Therefore we will respond to the question of "Are you afraid of die" nonchalantly. However once unfortunate mishap wreck us ....then only the self-consciousness will take place and we will remorse and anxious about the incident that hit us deplorably....Like this common phrase that we can always heard from people ,"When the syringe haven't pop into our skin......haiya is just painless and sapsapsui lah:-P

  6. Hopefully he will really turn over a new leaf and exercise. I have a friend who constantly told me that he is not afraid of death. I think most people will said so. My answer to her is that we do not afraid of death, we just afraid of not be able to die completely (meaning stoke, paralyze causing bed riding for the end of the life)

  8. I agree with this post of you so much. I have a brother. He has obesity issue. He enjoys food to max, he doesn't exercise at all. So, guess what? He admitted to hospital for week this year. He was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. He is on medicine now for long term.
After discharged from hospital, he was very cautious in his diet, but now he seems back to normal again. Back to eat everything he likes. I am pissed off, but can't do anything, except nagging him.
